THE pages of the present number of the 
"Karere Maori," are principally occupied
with extracts from the General Government
Gazette, which are here published for Ihe
information of the Maori people as relating
to matters in which they are all more or
less interested.
The extracts referred to comprise notices
of native lands acquired by the Government;
a notice of the appointment of a new dis-
trict under the Naive District Regulations
and Native Circuit Courts Acts, 1858; with
reports of persons appointed by the  Gover-
nor to ascertain the assent of the Native
owners to certain reserves being brought
under the operation of the Native Reserves
Act, 1856. On the subject of Native Re-
serves and the Law passed by the General
Assembly in 1836, for the purpose of pro-
viding means for making those reserves
available  for the benefit, of their owners, we
purpose to say a few words to our Maori
friends at an early opportunity, but our
space will not permit our entering upon the
question at present.

The new Native district the appointment, of
which is here notified includes the  whole
of the  portion of this island which lies to
the north of the recently appointed district
at the Bay of Islands. We are informed
that the Rarawa and Aupouri, the tribes
living there, are most anxious for the intro-
duction of the new system, and for the estab-
lisbment of Courts for the proper adminis-
tration of justice among them. The intelli-
gence and ability of the Chiefs who have
been appointed by the Governor to assist the
Resident Magistrate in the capacity of Native
Assessors afford good ground for the hope
that the  new Courts will prove a success and
a benefit to the people. The European
Magistrate also who will preside over these
Courts is a gentleman who has long been
well known and deservedly respected by the 
Maori people in that part of the country.
We hope and believe the time is not far
distant when old Maori customs will be for-
gotten throughout the northern portion of
this island, being superseded by the more
civilized insulations of the Pakeha and Ihe
regular administration,  of justice according
to English law. The sooner this is the case
the better for all.

acquired by Government.

The boundary commences at Kaiwaka, at
the place where te Ika-a-ranganui boundary-

summit of the hill (Te Mata) to Kahurangi,
turning there and running straight down to
the source of the Ngakau o Hape, and down
the stream to Ototara, and so to the Ngaru-
roro river, which forms the  boundary back to
Karituwhenua.
Tautane Block, estimated area 140, 000 acres.
BOUNDARIES:
Commencing at the Arataura, and run-
ning inland to the Kohi-o-tu. thence to
Tawaputahi. thence to Te Ahititi, thence to
Te Iringa-o-Rahunga where it turns to the
Southward, and runs to Rakautuhaha,
thence to Oporae, and thence thence still in
a Southerly direction to Whahatuara, when
it strikes the boundary of the land already
sold to the  Queen of England, and follows
the said boundary to Waimata, and from the
mouth of that stream round the coast to Te
Arataura.
Saving and excepting a reserve of one
thousand acres, more or less, between the
Wainui and Tautane rivers, surveyed by Mr.
Bousfield, in conjunction with the Native
Chiefs, and a reserve of fifty acres, more or
less, including certain Native Cultivations
and Graves on the  left bank of the Tautane
stream, also surveyed by Mr. Bousfield, in
conjunction with  the Native  Chiefs, and
which reserves are mentioned in the Deed
of Sale, and particularly delineated on the
original Map in the Land Office at Napier.

WHEREAS by the "Native Circuits
 Courts' Act, 1858," it is enacted that
it shall be lawful for the Governor in Council
from time to time to appoint Districts for the
purposes of the said Act, being districts over
which the Native Title shall not for the time
being have been extinguished, and any such
appointment to vary or revoke;
Now, therefore, His Excellency the Gover-
nor, by and with the advice and consent of
his Executive Council, doth hereby appoint
and declare, that the territory hereafter des-
cribed or referred to shall be a district for
the purpose of the said Act, to be called The
Native District of Mangonui, that is to say,

the Native Title has been extinguished with-
in the  meaning of the  said "Native Circuit
Courts' Act, 1858."

NATIVE RESERVES ACT, 1856.
I, Thomas Henry Smith, a person duly ap-
pointed in that behalf under the  provisions
of the Native Reserves Act, 1856, do hereby
report that I have ascertained the assent of the;
Aboriginal Inhabitants and proprietors of a
certain piece or parcel of land described in
Schedule hereunder written, and in a deed
of cession of the same to Her Majesty the
Queen, bearing date the 26th day of April,
1859, to the Grant by His Excellency the
Governor of New Zealand of the aforesaid
piece or parcel of land, to the Bishop of the
Church of England in New Zealand and his
successors, pursuant to the provisions of the
said Act, in trust for the site of a Church

FROM THE 15TH TO THE 30th JULY.
At the date of the last arrivals from the
Australian Colonies, markets were in the
same condition as we reported in our last
number. Flour firm at 271 for first quality.
Wheat scarce, and, in many places, of
inferior quality. The prevailing opinion
appears to be that prices would be main-

and, as the season advances, there is every
probability that they will fetch better prices.
Independently of the  requirements of
Australia, there is a new and growing source
of demand for the agricultural produce of
New Zealand from the French colony which
has recently  been planted in New Caledonia.
It is quite true that no direct trade has, as
yet, been opened up between the French
settlements and any of our New Zealand
ports; but, although this has not been done,
there is a great and increasing intercourse
between Port de France, the principal
French town of New Caledonia, and Sydney;
and as there are a number of French
soldiers and French ships of vvar stationed
there, and as these require to be provisioned
and fed, there can be no question that if the
New Zealand farmers will only extend their
cultivations and increase their stores that
they will find more than one available and
profitable market where to to ship their
produce.
There have been comparatively few
arrivals from foreign ports since our last;
we have only to report the steam ship Lord
Worsley, 290 tons, Captain Johnson, from
Sydney, with merchandise, and ten passen-
gers; the brigantine Spray, 106 tons, Capt.
McDonald, also from Sydney, with goods,
and eleven passengers; the barque traveller,
462 tons, Captain Ellis, from London, with
a large and valuable cargo of merchandise,
and fourteen passengers; the steam ship
Lord Worsley, 290 tons, Captain Johnson,
from Napier, with sundries, and six passen-
gers; the steam ship Lord Ashley, 294 tons,.
Captain Stewart, from Nelson and New
Plymouth to the Manukau, with sundry
merchandise from Sydney and the South,
and nineteen passengers.
The departures were the steam ship Lord
Worsley, 290 tons, Captain Johnson, for
Napier,' in ballast; the schooner Gazelle,
212 tons, Captain Cunningham, for Sydney,
with 20 tons flour, 520 gallons oil, 5½ tons
kauri gum, 41 coils rope, 700 bushels bran,
9-20 lbs. cheese, 42 tons potatoes, 12, 000
feet sawn timber, 15 passengers; the steam
ship Lord Ashley, 294 tons, Captain Stewart,
from the Manukau, for New Plymouth,
Nelson, and the South, with sundry goods,
51 passengers; the steam ship Lord Worsley,
290 tons, Captain Johnson, for Sydney, with
goods, 8 passengers; the schooner Eliezer,
56 tons, Captain Kean, for Napier, with
25, 171 feet sawn timber, 15, 000 shingles,
sundry merchandise; the brigantine Spray,
106 tons, Captain McDonald, for Sydney,

quantities from the coast, but we regret to
remark a continued decrease of maize as
compared with the supplies of former years.
The arrivals were 48 vessels of 1115 tons,
with 98 passengers, 7118 bushels wheat,
645 bushels maize, 6 bushels oats, 15½ tons
potatoes, 23 cwt. pumpkins, 2 casks salt
fish, 7 tons 3 cwt. salt pork, 13 cwt. bacon,
590 Ibs. lard, 300 Ibs. butter, 51 pigs, 10
fowls, 28 pigeons, 1 horse, 1 box eggs, 1
tun humpback oil, 5½ tons flax, 5 tons kauri
gum, 63 tons copper ore, 441 tons firewood,
75 Ibs. leather, 23 bundles fruit trees, 4
boat, 24, 000 shingles, 178 posts, 600 rails,
1090 feet house blocks, 58, 600 feel sawn
timber.
The departures coastwise were 47 vessels
of 1078 tons, with 79 passengers, and the
usual trading cargoes.
